If You'd Like to Hear Me on AIR AMERICA

Guys, I had the privilege of appearing on the Air America program The Cutting Edge on Sunday morning, and mixed it up with the hosts, Anita and Shelley.

I was off-air for the first 20 minutes, then joined the discussion, which covered a whole range of issues, from whether the military supports McCain or Obama, to Cindy Sheehan's run for congress in Nancy Pelosi's district, to whether or not I think the Dems and Obama are showing signs of weakness, to what I think needs to be done for Dems to win--but it wasn't really all about me, although they referred to it as an "interview."

It was a lively discussion, and I think I held my own okay.

I found the early part of the discussion--before I joined, but I was listening in--to be somewhat offensive, in that Shelley was making the point that, he thought, most voters fit the profile of Jay Leno's "JayWalkers"--too ignorant and basically stupid to know HOW to vote.

I didn't get the chance to say what I wanted to say, that for one thing, that's the worst kind of "liberal" point of view that so many people in the middle of the political spectrum find offensive--but also that we don't know how many smart people Leno interviews before he finds the stupidest people in L.A. to answer his questions.  You can't assume the whole country is that ill-informed.

But I wanted to speak for so many people who live in the fly-over states, who don't come from liberal areas like New York or L.A. or Seattle (or Chicago, where my hosts are from).  I wanted to speak for progressives who live in Red states and more conservative areas, and for the very real concerns of those voters who consider themselves Independent, or who are more conservative and must be convinced at this point that the Democrats will answer their concerns better than the Republicans.

You sure don't win those voters over by basically calling them stupid.

I'm told the last third of the hour-long show, I came on strong and made my case convincingly.

That's up to listeners to decide.

But we had a lot of fun.  I do live in a very conservative area, a very solitary life on a small ranch, so I don't get much opportunity to have such a stimulating discussion with other progressives.  I had a ball.  Off-air, after the show was over, they asked if I would consider appearing again, with their weekday afternoon host, Jeff Farius.  I said I'd love to, and hope to hear from them again.

Here's the podcast, for those of you who are interested:
